Much of the metro's shoreline and marsh-adjacent land falls under the NC Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA), requiring a CAMA permit for construction near estuarine shorelines, oceanfront setback lines, and Areas of Environmental Concern (AECs); FEMA flood zones AE and VE are common on the islands, driving elevated/piling construction and freeboard requirements that also affect roof framing and attachment details.
